Meetings set on Hawaiian consultation plan

HONOLULU – Meetings are scheduled to begin next week across the state to seek comment from the Hawaiian community on the draft U.S. Department of Defense Hawaiian Consultation Protocol.
When finalized, this draft document will provide guidance to DoD military and civilian personnel on their consultation responsibilities to Native Hawaiians.
The draft protocol sets definitions for which Native Hawaiian organizations may be consulted and it directs the military to manage Hawai'i lands and resources in a way that is aligned with the goals of Native Hawaiian organizations that preserves and protects resources. The Office of Hawaiian Affairs and Hui Malama I Na Kupuna O Hawai'i Nei are named as such organizations in the protocol.
