Yoo gains Futures semifinals

Daniel Yoo stayed on his hot streak in Hawai'i yesterday. The sixth seed from South Korea advanced to the semifinals of the Honolulu Futures by beating Chase Buchanan at Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park Tennis Complex.
Yoo won the first set 6-3 and was ahead 1-0 in the second when Buchanan had to retire after spraining his ankle. Yoo, 23, won last week's Futures stop at Mauna Lani and is ranked 771st in the world. Buchanan, 17, from Ohio, won the Boys 18 singles title at this year's Easter Bowl and captured the Futures event at Vero Beach.
Second-seeded Igor Sijsling, the top-ranked player left in the draw, also won yesterday. He swept Matt Reid, 6-1, 6-1, and will face fifth-seeded Andrey Kumantsov, of Russia, in one of today's semifinals. Kumantsov defeated American Sheeva Parbhu, 6-3, 6-3.
In the last quarterfinal featuring two more Americans, Alexander Domijan defeated Adam El Mihdawy, 6-4, 6-4.
Today's semifinals and tomorrow's final start at 10 a.m. The USTA Pro Circuit event has a $15,000 purse and also offers ranking points.
The USTA Hawai'i Pacific Section will celebrate USTA Membership Appreciation today and tomorrow, from 10 a.m. to noon at CORP.

SHARKS STILL IN HUNT
Satoshi Nagai gave up a run on one hit and struck out 11 over seven innings, and Kala Ka'aihue hit a two-run homer to lead the Honolulu Sharks to a 4-1 victory over the Waikiki BeachBoys in Hawaii Winter Baseball last night at Les Murakami Stadium.
The Sharks improved to 17-17 and can clinch the East Division title with a victory over the BeachBoys (18-17) in today's regular-season finale starting at 7 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.
At Hans L'Orange Park last night, West Division champion West Oahu CaneFires (19-14) held off the North Shore Honu (14-20), 6-5.
GOLF
SOERO FALLS TO 15TH
University of Hawai'i graduate Pierre-Henri Soero shot two strokes higher for the second straight day to drop into a share of 15th at the PGA Tour Second Stage Qualifier in Brooksville, Fla., yesterday.
Soero (72-210) is six shots off Josh Teater's lead going into today's final round. Robert Gamez is tied for second and former Hawaiian Open champion John Huston has a share of 18th.
The top 20 after today advance to the Final Qualifying School, Dec. 3 to 8 at PGA West in California. The top 25 there receive Tour cards for next year.
