Two men were indicted today in Honolulu for allegedly stealing $400 from a University of Hawai'i-Manoa student last month.
Benjamin Hendrickson and Michael Pantzer, both 20, are each accused of two counts of second-degree robbery. A $20,000 warrant for arrest was issued today for both suspects.
The robbery charge stems from an early morning confrontation Oct. 24 near the bicycle racks at Frear Hall after two men allegedly entered a sixth-floor dormitory room at Gateway House, 2563 Dole St., awoke and threatened a male student and fled with cash stolen from a desk drawer at 2:40 a.m., according to an affidavit filed at District Court.
The victim chased after the suspects and confronted them at the bike racks. One of the suspects allegedly punched the victim in the right temple. During an ensuing struggle, the two men fell to the ground, and the second suspect pulled the victim off his companion allowing both to run off.
Witnesses to the confrontation identified Hendrickson as the Caucasian man with long blond hair and no shirt who fled. Campus Security, meanwhile, spotted a man fitting the suspect's description enter a room at the Hale Wainani dormitory. Police located Hendrickson and arrested him at 3:30 a.m. after the victim identified him as a suspect.
Pantzer was arrested Oct. 25.
The victim told police he did not know the two men but that the suspects seemed to know that he had large amounts of money and where he kept it, the affidavit stated.
The victim said he awoke in his dorm room to find a man standing over him who asked him "where's your money? This doesn't need to get worse," the document said.
A few seconds later, the victim heard the second suspect, who had been searching the room, say "I got it." Both suspects used the fire escape stairs to flee from the building.
The money was taken from a desk drawer and a room key from the desk top, police said in the affidavit.
