Drunk driving arrests up, with 25 more last week
Last week, 25 motorists were arrested on suspicion of drunk driving on the Big Island, raising this year's DUI arrest total to 1,206, compared with 1,193 during the same period last year, police said.
Of last week's arrests, eight were of people involved in traffic crashes and eight were under the age of 21.
While DUI arrests are up 1.1 percent, police said, major accidents are down 18 percent on the Big Island. Last year, there were 1,861 through Nov. 17. This year, there have been 1,528.
So far this year, there have been 24 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 35 during the same period last year, a decrease of 31 percent.
