Campbell and 'Iolani don't compete in the same league, but there is familiarity and mutual respect between their football coaches.

It goes back to the late 1980s when Campbell head coach Amosa Amosa and 'Iolani head coach Wendell Look both were on the 'Iolani coaching staff.

From 1989 to 1991, Amosa was the Raiders' offensive line coach.

Look was 'Iolani's defensive coordinator before being promoted to head coach in 1991, replacing Glenn Young.

On Friday, Amosa's Sabers and Look's Raiders will meet in the semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank Division II State Football Championships at Roosevelt's Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.

Amosa, in his first year with the Sabers, graduated from Campbell and played offensive lineman for the University of Hawai'i from 1985 to 1988.

"When he first started out (at 'Iolani) he brought a lot of enthusiasm because of his background playing at UH," Look said. "He's always been a student of the game, asking questions to get input. He has a passion for the game and loves the kids."

Look has compiled a 121-88-3 record in 18 seasons as 'Iolani's head coach.

"Before he became head coach, he was an awesome defensive coordinator," Amosa said. "He became the head coach and he became the offensive coordinator and he did a great job. He has a lot of knowledge in football. He knows how to put the players where he needs to put them."

Look and Amosa have employed the run-and-shoot offense to rack up impressive offensive numbers this season.

"They run the same things we do except for little things here and there," Amosa said of 'Iolani, which averages 270 yards per game. "It's nothing we haven't seen before. We'll try our best to prepare."

Campbell (11-1) averages 363 yards per game.

"I think it's not something that's unusual for us," Look said of facing the Sabers' version of the run-and-shoot.

'Iolani, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion, is led by Jarrett Arakawa, who has completed 117 of 241 passes for 1,710 yards and 19 touchdowns.

Brandon Ball (561 yards), Kela Marciel (453) and Trevyn Tulonghari (407) are Arakawa's favorite targets. Marciel has a per-catch average of 28.3 yards, and also plays quarterback and defensive back.

Kellen Imada has rushed 165 times for 870 yards and 11 touchdowns for 'Iolani, the defending state Division II champion and No. 1 seed.

Campbell's quarterback is Lalo Respicio, who is 173 of 283 for 2,806 yards and 33 touchdowns.

Arthur Aiwohi (907 yards), Daniel Masifilo (718) and Samson Anguay (678) are the leading receivers for Campbell, the O'ahu Interscholastic Association White champion.

Brandon Ahuna has rushed 94 times for 460 yards and five touchdowns for the Sabers.

Campbell, ranked No. 8 in The Advertiser's Top 10 poll, is coming off a 25-15 first-round victory over host Konawaena on Friday.

"Coming off the win over Konawaena, we're confident," Amosa said. "We know Konawaena is a tough team and it was a tough game. The score isn't indicative of the toughness of the game."

Look was in Kealakekua to scout the game, and came away impressed with Campbell.

Look said he's seen the Sabers play on television on OC16, "but you watch them live, I'm impressed with their quickness."

No. 7 'Iolani (9-3), had a first-round bye and hasn't played since Nov. 8.

"We've taken time off to re-energize physically and mentally, and get caught up on school work," Look said.

The Campbell-'Iolani winner will play the Radford-Lahainaluna winner for the state Division II title Dec. 5 at Aloha Stadium at 4:30 p.m.
