BUSINESS BRIEFS
Average gas price in Isles at $2.77

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Hawai'i gasoline prices fell for a ninth week, though they remained well above the national average.

Yesterday's AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge Report showed the average statewide price for a gallon of unleaded was $2.77, or 17 cents lower than a week earlier.

That compared with the national average $1.84, and Hawai'i continued to feature the nation's second-highest prices after Alaska's $2.82 average. Besides Hawai'i, six other states and Washington, D.C., had prices that averaged more than $2 a gallon.

Gasoline prices have been in decline as lower global demand hits crude oil prices. Crude oil futures have fallen more than 63 percent since hitting record highs in January.

The AAA report also showed: Honolulu's average price fell to $2.66 from $2.82, Hilo's price was down to $2.84 from $2.91, and Wailuku's average price declined to $3.16 from $3.33.

The prices are collected from fleet vehicle credit card transactions and represent the combined averages of the last card swipe of the previous day. AAA's data service does not collect the prices for Kaua'i.

Hawai'i stocks had a mixed trading day as Wall Street recorded its fifth consecutive gain.

Maui Land and Pineapple was among issues losing ground, falling 10 cents a share to $11.23.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 102.43 points yesterday, wrapping up its biggest five-day rally in more than 75 years.

LOCKHEED WINS CONTRACT WITH NAVY

Lockheed Martin said it will provide installation and engineering support to the U.S. Navy's Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific under a contract.

The company said it will offer technical services to the center field activity in Hawai'i and aboard U.S. ships in port and at sea in the Pacific Rim. Lockheed Martin said it and another company were selected to compete for up to $5.1 million in work during the one-year contract.

CHARTER CARRIER ADDS SIXTH JETLINER

North American Airlines said it has agreed to lease a sixth Boeing 767-300ER aircraft for its charter service that spans from Miami to Honolulu and elsewhere in the world.

The Jamaica, N.Y., air carrier at one time had scheduled flights from the West Coast to Honolulu but now concentrates on charter service along with its sister company, World Airways. North American also has the distinction of operating the aircraft used by President-elect Barack Obama.
