'Iolani's formula to success last night against Campbell was picking off passes leads to picking up the victory.

'Iolani intercepted six passes and Kellen Imada had a couple of short touchdown runs in the first half as the Raiders beat Campbell, 24-6, in the semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank Division II State Football Championships at Roosevelt's Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.

'Iolani, ranked No. 7 in The Advertiser's Top 10 poll, will play Radford for the title Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Aloha Stadium. The Raiders will be looking to become the first Division II team to win consecutive state titles.

"This was the kids' goal," said 'Iolani coach Wendell Look. "They worked hard and sacrificed. At the top of their list was getting back to the championship game and winning."

'Iolani, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion and No. 1 seed, won DII state titles in 2005 and 2007. The first DII state championship game was in 2003.

Kela Marciel and Andrew Skalman each had two interceptions for 'Iolani, and Breland Almadova and Addison Kogami had one apiece. Kogami's pick fittingly came on the final play of the game.

"Our defense has played well," Look said. "It has been carrying us and setting up the offense. Tonight, we stopped a potent Campbell offense."

Campbell, the O'ahu Interscholastic Association White Conference champion, finished with 242 total yards, but was constantly stymied by the interceptions.

Sabers quarterback Lalo Respicio completed 21 of 45 passes for 185 yards. His six interceptions matched his total for the entire season.

"They did a good job," said Campbell coach Amosa Amosa of the Raiders' defense. "They did what we expected them to do. Lalo overthrew a couple of interceptions over the middle."

Imada finished with 12 carries for 79 yards, but was forced to leave midway through the second quarter after being tackled hard after a short reception.

"I don't know," Look said of Imada's injury. "Doc said he'll be all right."

'Iolani's Ammon Baldomero, who replaced Imada, finished with 13 carries for 56 yards, and Jarrett Arakawa completed 16 of 27 passes for 156 yards.

'Iolani, which ran a hurry-up offense, scored on its first two possessions with both drives lasting more than 10 plays.

"We knew Arakawa had a quick release, so we tried to press their guys and sit back in zones," Amosa said. "In the beginning, we figured out that didn't help us."

The Raiders took the opening kickoff and used 11 plays to cover 67 yards with Imada capping the drive with a 1-yard plunge. Skalman's PAT made it 7-0 with 7:58 left.

On fourth-and-4 from the Sabers' 30, Arakawa hit Brandon Ball for 6 yards to extend the drive. 'Iolani (10-3) scored three plays later.

Campbell, ranked No. 8, drove to the 'Iolani 32 on its first possession, but turned the ball over on downs.

The Raiders covered 68 yards on 12 plays with Imada scoring on a 2-yard run with 11:34 left in the second quarter to make it 14-0.

'Iolani converted a fourth-and-6 from the Campbell 28 on the drive with Arakawa hitting Imada for 15 yards.

"We have the type of offense that can wear other teams down," Look said. "We aren't as physical as other teams, but we try to do it."

'Iolani scored on the final play of the half with Skalman booting a 22-yard field goal for a 17-0 lead.

Campbell, the No. 4 seed, forced an incomplete pass by 'Iolani on fourth-and-6 from the 22, but Arakawa was roughed on the play and the ball was moved to the Campbell 11. Skalman's field goal came three plays later.

The possession was set up by Marciel's interception and 6-yard return to the Campbell 38. It was the only interception that led to an 'Iolani score.

Campbell (11-2) scored on the first play of the fourth period on a 1-yard run by Respicio to get within 17-6. The Campbell quarterback tried to sneak it in on fourth down, but was bottled up and bounced to the right for the score. The extra point was blocked.

'Iolani answered on the next series with a 13-play, 77-yard drive that culminated with a 10-yard end around to the right side by Marciel to make it 24-6 with 5:26 left.
