One man was killed and three other men were injured during an explosion this afternoon at a Campbell Industrial Park company that processes used fuel oil, Honolulu Fire Capt. Terry Seelig said.
The blast occurred around 1:30 p.m. along the 91-400 block of Komohana Street, near the intersection of Kauhi Street, and did not cause a fire, Seelig said.
The explosion appeared to be centered around a 9,500-gallon tank that holds used fuel oil, which was knocked 30 feet away.
The blast killed a 23-year-old man who was blown more than 100 feet and landed at an adjacent business called Bonded Materials.
Seelig said the dead man and two of the injured men were contract employees of Philip Services. Another man who works at Bonded Materials also was injured.
The injuries involved a man in his late 40s and another in his early 20s, who were both taken in stable condition to a local area trauma center, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city's emergency services department.
Another man, in his late 20s or early 30s, was taken in stable condition to a different hospital, Cheplic said.
The dead man suffered "extensive multi-system trauma," Cheplic said.
Paramedics pronounced him dead at 1:36 p.m., Cheplic said.
Jess Keopke, general manager of Philip Services Corp., confirmed that the plant is used to process used fuel oil.
"We're investigating," he said. "We still haven't got any information."
