A Hawai'i Army National Guard soldier died Thursday evening during training at Fort Hood, Texas, the Hawai'i Department of Defense announced yesterday.

The soldier, assigned to the 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, collapsed and died shortly after completing a six-mile run about 7 p.m. at the North Fort Hood training area.

Fellow soldiers administered CPR, and an ambulance took him to Coryell County Memorial Hospital in Gatesville, Texas. The soldier was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital, the news release said.

The soldier's name was not being disclosed until relatives were notified.

Officials are investigating to try to determine the cause of death.

In August, about 1,200 soldiers with the 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, with headquarters at Kalaeloa, left for training at Fort Hood. The unit is scheduled to be deployed to the Middle East this month.

The brigade is made up of soldiers from Hawai'i, Arizona, American Samoa, Guam and Saipan.

The unit served an 18-month deployment in Iraq and Kuwait that began in July 2004.

On this deployment, the brigade will have command-and-control and security responsibilities in Kuwait. It will also provide security escorts for convoys into Iraq, as far north as Mosul, the release said.
