The Dallas Cowboys acquired wide receiver Roy Williams from the Detroit Lions just before the National Football League's trade deadline.

The Cowboys gave up their first-, third- and sixth-round draft picks in 2009 in exchange for Williams and Detroit's seventh-round selection next year, the Cowboys said in a news release.

Williams, 26, had 17 catches for 232 yards and a touchdown in five games for the Lions this season. The five-year NFL veteran earned a Pro Bowl bid for the 2006 season, when he caught 82 passes for 1,310 yards and seven scores.

The Cowboys' acquisition comes on the same day that Dallas defensive back Adam "Pacman" Jones was suspended indefinitely by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell after being involved in an alcohol-related fight at a Dallas hotel on Oct. 8. Dallas quarterback Tony Romo was also lost for an indefinite period after fracturing the small finger on his throwing hand two days ago in a loss at Arizona.

The Cowboys are 4-2, tied with the Washington Redskins and trailing the New York Giants (4-1) in the National Football Conference's East Division.

Detroit is 0-5 this season, joining Cincinnati (0-6) as the only winless NFL teams.

Williams, a native of Odessa, Texas, was drafted seventh overall by the Lions in the 2004 NFL draft out of the University of Texas. He's caught 262 passes for 3,884 yards and 29 touchdowns during his NFL career.
