A team of scientists that includes physicists from the University of Hawai'i-Manoa are doing research at the Chinese Academy of Science's Institute of High Energy Physics in Beijing. Members of the UH team include professors Fred Harris, Stephen Olsen and Gary Varner. Postdoctoral fellows are Chengping Shen and Qian Liu.
Hawai'i Pacific University has been ranked one of the best colleges and universities in the West, according to The Princeton Review. The New York City-based education services company selected HPU as one of 120 institutions it recommends in its "Best in the West" section on its Web site feature "2009 Best Colleges: Region by Region."
Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann recently presented awards to winners of the third annual exhibit and contest of The National Arts Program.
Scott Goto's painting, entitled "Aumakua," was named the overall best in show in the third annual exhibit and contest of the program.
Other winning entries in the exhibit's various categories include:
Adult Professional, Shane Hamamoto; Adult Intermediate, Kevin Hotema; Adult Amateur, Elena Lao; Youth, 12-18 Years, Jenelle Higashida; Youth, Under 12 Years, Timothy Leoncio.
Beach Environmental Awareness Campaign Hawai'i has won the 2008 Living Reef Award in the nongovernmental organization category. Suzanne Frazer and Dean Otsuki of the organization were nominated for the award and received $500 for BEACH and a trophy from Tiffany's. The award is given to groups and individuals that go above and beyond in their action to make a difference and do the most to preserve Hawai'i's reef ecosystem.
The University of Hawai'i Foundation and the UH Alumni Association have hired Janet Yoshida Bullard as associate vice president of alumni relations at the UHF and executive director of the alumni group.
Yoshida most recently served as senior director of marketing and promotions for Hawaiian Airlines. Her previous 10 years were spent with the Hawai'i Visitors and Convention Bureau and the San Diego Visitors and Convention Bureau.
Transportation executive Ayman El-Dakhakhni will lead more than 2,100 Rotarians in 43 Rotary Clubs throughout Hawai'i as district governor 2008-2009. He is president of VIP Trans, VIP Car Rental and Champ Medical Clinic.
He was involved with Rotary youth programs while growing up in Egypt. Upon arriving in Hawai'i in 1981, he reached out to Rotary for friendship and community service opportunities after establishing his businesses.
He will stress membership growth and Rotary Foundation giving during his year in office.
