Citing safety concerns, Kalani High will forfeit tomorrow's varsity football game at Waialua, O'ahu Interscholastic Association football coordinator Harold Tanaka said.

The junior varsity game between the same teams is still scheduled. The JV game will start at 5 p.m.

Kalani coach Greg Taguchi said his team's playing status is week-to-week, depending on what the school deems as safe for the players. Kalani has 24 players on its roster, but only 18 were able to practice yesterday because of injuries or other issues. Taguchi said the school determined Tuesday of its decision to not play this weekend.

"We had to tell them the other day we weren't going to participate this weekend," Taguchi said. "But they still came out, practiced hard. They're not happy, but they understand."

The Falcons have 42 on their JV, split about 50-50 in freshmen and sophomores. But Taguchi said it isn't as simple as bringing up JV players to the varsity for the sake of increasing the roster size. He said the JV players simply aren't ready for varsity and that also would constitute a safety issue.

Kalani (0-1) was idle last week.
