The Tennessee Titans signed quarterback Chris Simms with starter Vince Young sidelined as long as a month because of a sprained left knee.

Simms, the son of former New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms, probably will be the backup to Kerry Collins in this week's National Football League game against Cincinnati.

"Chris has been a starter in the league and should fit into our system well," Titans General Manager Mike Reinfeldt said in a statement. Simms, 28, was released last month after five seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Young, 25, will be out two to four weeks after hurting his knee during the fourth quarter of the Titans' 17-10 season- opening win over Jacksonville.

The Titans asked Nashville police for help in locating Young two days ago after family members contacted the team and said he left his house in a state of mind that had them worried. Young, who didn't have his mobile phone with him, was later tracked down at a friend's house.

"Not having all the facts available to us and approaching the matter prudently, we contacted Metro Police to make them aware of the situation and asked for their assistance in locating Vince," the team said in a statement. "He then came to the practice facility where it was determined that those initial concerns by his friends and family were unfounded and he returned home without incident."

Simms and Young both played at the University of Texas. The Titans didn't disclose terms of Simms's contract.
