When Matt Horn of Kailua got an early morning call Monday, the criminal defense lawyer thought it was about a client.
But Horn said it was "quite a shock" when he found out that he had won the weekly Pigskin Picks contest.
Horn, a 1974 Punahou School and University of Hawai'i law school graduate, picked all 15 games correctly and won the tiebreaker by coming within 11 of the total combined yards of 651 in the UH-Weber State game. Horn, who beat out only a handful of perfect ballots, earns a trip for two to Las Vegas and $500.
Winning Pigskin Picks hadn't entered his mind this week since his family has been playing it "forever, and "we'd thought we'd never win," he said.
Furthermore, Horn, whose son Erik plays receiver for the Buffanblu, had just returned from Seattle, where Punahou's football and girls volleyball teams went unbeaten.
"The volleyball girls were amazing (they won all three matches)," he said. "We had the band there, and the football team. So it was like a home game."
Horn said quarterback Kimo Makaula, subbing for injured Caymen Shutter, "looked comfortable and relaxed" while leading Punahou to a 42-19 win over Central Kitsap in the Emerald City Kickoff Classic. Makaula threw for 303 yards.
Horn says his family goes to Las Vegas sometimes. "We go through there," he said. "My wife goes to see my daughter."
Their daughter is Heather Horn, a 2004 state champion for Punahou in air riflery who now shoots for Nevada.
