Brenan Furtado's big game came close to shattering another record.
The Damien running back rushed 23 times for 200 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Monarchs to a 45-33 win over Pac-Five on Saturday.
His five TD runs were one short of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu record set by 'Iolani's Joe Igber in 1998. Furtado had TD runs of 15, 67, 2, 11 and 3 yards.
Two weeks ago, Pac-Five quarterback PJ Minaya broke ILH records for passing yards (513) and pass completions (36).
"He has a combination of speed, balance, strength and good peripheral (vision)," Damien coach Wally Aina said. "He's probably one of the best backs as far as balance."
Furtado's first TD run of 15 yards in the first quarter broke a 7-all game. All five of his scores came in the first half, helping Damien to a 38-14 lead.
"He's not unexpected," Aina said of Furtado's performance. "He's a hardworker and been doing it since the preseason.
"He's a performer, works hard in practices and pushed every day, pushes on every rep."
Furtado wasn't the only Monarch to help the team pull through. Stanton Pilialoha threw two touchdowns and totaled 163 yards on 9-of-15 passing in his first start.
"He had a fantastic game and overall performance," Aina said.
Damien's 4-1 start (1-1 in ILH) may have caught others by surprise, but his team's performance is no surprise to Aina, who retired from coaching only to return this season. The Monarchs still have the same 71 players that were there during preseason workouts.
"The group of kids we got, the workouts we put them through, nobody quit," Aina said. "It doesn't surprise me at the hard work from every single one of them."
Damien faces Word of Life on Saturday in a game that will be televised on OC-16.
