Sumo: Hakuho (11-1) maintains lead in autumn tournament

Associated Press

TOKYO — Mongolian grand champion Hakuho defeated Chiyotaikai on Thursday to maintain sole possession of the lead at the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament.

In the day's final bout at Ryogoku Kokugikan, Hakuho used an arm throw at the edge of the ring to send ozeki Chiyotaikai toppling to the dirt surface.

Hakuho, who also won the title at the Nagoya tournament in July and is bidding for his eighth Emperor's Cup, improved to 11-1 with three days left in the 15-day meet. Chiyotaikai dropped to 7-5.

In other major bouts, Mongolian sekiwake Ama stayed in the title chase when he shoved out Bulgarian ozeki Kotooshu to improve to 10-2. Kotooshu has struggled with his form in this tournament and dropped to an unimpressive 6-6 record.

Ozeki Kotomitsuki also kept pace when he swatted down Toyohibiki seconds after the faceoff to pick up his 10th win against two losses. Toyohibiki, a No. 6 maegashira, dropped to 7-5.

Ozeki Kaio dealt Goeido's title hopes a major blow when he sent the fifth-ranked maegashira to his third loss of the tournament.

Kaio wrapped up a winning record and improved to 8-4 with an arm throw at the edge while Goeido dropped to 9-3 with three days left.

Estonian komusubi Baruto lifted top maegashira Kotoshogiku up and hoisted him over the straw ridge to give both wrestlers a record of 5-7.

Sekiwake Toyonoshima overpowered top maegashira Miyabiyama to pick up his fifth win against seven losses. Miyabiyama fell to an unflattering 3-9.
