A $5,000 grant from the Bank of Hawai'i Charitable Foundation will allow patients to watch uplifting DVDs while receiving chemotherapy treatment.
The concept of DVDs for patients to watch came from a patient herself - Susan Kobayashi, who in 2007 was receiving cancer treatment requiring hours of chemotherapy. She participated in a humor study sponsored by the hospital's Pain and Palliative Care Department.
That inspired Kobayashi to bring laughter and funny DVDs, card games and ginger candy and tea to the chemotherapy treatment room.
"Through the generosity of the Bank of Hawai'i Charitable Foundation, we are able to provide added comfort and aid to our cancer patients receiving chemotherapy here at our cancer center," said The Queen's Medical Center's president Art Ushijima in a prepared statement.
