Using a revamped yet familiar lineup, the University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team extended its winning streak to 11 matches, sweeping San Jose State yesterday.

The Rainbow Wahine (12-2, 5-0 Western Athletic Conference) defeated the Spartans (6-9, 2-3), 25-17, 25-20, 25-20, in San Jose, Calif., to complete their three-match road trip undefeated.

UH hasn't lost a match since August, dropping only five sets in that span.

Rainbow Wahine setter Dani Mafua and outside hitter Aneli Cubi-Otineru did not start because "they were not feeling up to par," Hawai'i coach Dave Shoji said.

Stephanie Brandt started her first match at setter this season in place of Mafua, and Tara Hittle, who had played at libero all season, started her first match at outside hitter replacing Cubi-Otineru.

Cubi-Otineru did play in the back row for outside hitter Jamie Houston, and Liz Ka'aihue, who was last year's libero, played for Hittle.

"That's pretty much how we started all last year, so it wasn't that big of an adjustment," Shoji said. "The players who filled in did a nice job, and it was a pretty veteran team anyways out there."

For the second straight match, freshman outside hitter Kanani Herring, who sprained her ankle in practice Sept. 22, played only in the back row. Stephanie Ferrell played in the front for Herring, registering a team-high 10 kills on .471 hitting.

"Ferrell filled in nicely all weekend," Shoji said. "She had a good weekend and she's a good player for being so young."

The Rainbow Wahine outhit the Spartans .317 to .167, led by Ferrell. Houston added nine kills and Hittle eight. Middles Amber Kaufman and Nickie Thomas each had seven kills and hit .400.

The Rainbow Wahine broke open the first set after a 15-all start, scoring 10 of the final 12 points of the set.

In the second set, Hawai'i took an 11-6 lead before San Jose State closed to 20-19, but the Rainbow Wahine went on a 5-1 run, ended with a kill by Nickie Thomas to capture the set.

It was never that close in the final set, with UH moving to a 17-11 lead. The Spartans came within 3, last at 23-20, but a kill by Hittle and a hitting error by San Jose State ended the match.

"We've had some lineup changes because of injuries and illnesses, and we didn't look real sharp," Shoji said. "Individually we had some good performances, so overall it was a good trip."

Notes: Houston was named Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week yesterday, the second time she's received that honor in the past three weeks. Houston averaged 6.17 kills and 2.33 digs per set while hitting .308 as she led the Rainbow Wahine to a 2-0 record in their first two road matches of the year. The senior posted 21 kills on .341 hitting with 11 digs in a win at Louisiana Tech for her second double-double of the season. She then had a match-high 16 kills in a sweep of New Mexico State on Saturday. Houston is now averaging 4.38 kills, 1.65 digs and 0.65 blocks per set for the season, including a 5.50 kills per set average in WAC play. The honor is also the third straight for the Rainbow Wahine. Houston won the honor on Sept. 15 and Kanani Herring won the award on Sept. 22. Hawai'i remained at No. 7 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll. Penn State is ranked first.
