Nevada pounds Hawaii 10-5, takes WAC baseball series

Advertiser Staff

Derek Achelpohl pitched eight strong innings and was backed by a 14-hit attack to help Nevada beat Hawai'i, 10-5, today, to take 2 of 3 in the abbreviated Western Athletic Conference series at Peccole Park in Reno, Nev.

Hawai'i won the continuation of a suspended game earlier today, 13-11.

Achelpohl (3-3) allowed three runs (two earned), eight hits and two walks with six strikeouts for the Wolf Pack (16-6-17 overall, 5-2 WAC).

Nate Klein (0-2) gave up four runs (three earned) in three innings in his first start for the Rainbows (21-12, 4-3) since March 13 because of elbow tenderness.

The fourth game of the series was canceled because last night's suspended game was made up today, which orignally was supposed to be a doubleheader.

Since WAC rules prohibit any parts of three games to be played in one day, the last game could not be made up. The Rainbows are scheduled to leave tomorrow for Hawai'i.

The Wolf Pack got two off Klein in the first. Matt Bowman led off with a double to center and took third on Westley Moss' single to short. Moss stole second, but catcher Landon Hernandez's throwing error allowed Bowman to score and Moss to take third. Moss scored when Shaun Kort grounded out to second to make it 2-0.

Sean Montplaisir's solo home run to left-center with two outs in the top of the second inning pulled UH to 2-1.

Nevada added two in the third. Moss singled and took third on Kort's single to right. Jaquez singled to center to score Moss with Kort taking third. Kort scored and Jaquez went to second when Melino grounded out to third, making it 4-1.

Hernandez's solo home run to left with one out made it 4-2 in the fourth.

The Wolf Pack increased their lead in the fifth against Jared Alexander. Moss led off with a single off the pitcher's glove. Moss stole second, but Kort was called out on strikes. Jaquez's single to first moved Moss to third. Melino's RBI single to right moved Jaquez to second and increased UN's lead to 5-2. Stassi walked to load the bases, but Nick Leid grounded to second for a double play.

Hawai'i got one back in the sixth. Kevin Macdonald led off by reaching on shortstop Joe Kohan's error and scored on Kolten Wong's double to right-center to make it 5-3.

The Wolf Pack sent 10 batters to the plate in a five-run sixth. Michael Turay led off with a triple to left and Kohan walked. Matt Bowman doubled to left to score Turay and move Kohan to third. Moss' two-run single made it 8-3 to chase Alexander for Alex Capaul. Kort flied out to center, Jaquez fouled out to first. Melino's two-run home run to center made it 10-3. Stassi walked and Capaul was replaced by Jesse Moore. Leid singled to right to move Stassi to second, but Turay struck out to end the inning.

Hawai'i added two runs in the ninth. Montplaisir led off with a double off Beau Witsoe and scored on pinch hitter Beau Witsoe's double to center to make it 10-4. Garcia flied out to left, advancing Chevalier to third. Pinch hitter Jeffrey Van Doornum singled off Witsoe to score Chevalier to make it 10-5.
