Tax protests planned at state Capitol, on Neighbor Islands

Conservative groups and Hawaii Republicans are scheduled to hold seven anti-tax protests around the state today.
The largest is planned for the state Capitol late this afternoon, with others set for Maui, Kauai and the Big Island.
The rallies will be aimed at pending legislation that would increase tourist and general excise levies and income taxes on wealthy wage earners.
The Tax Day protests are being organized by the Hawaii Republican Assembly, the Grassroot Institute, state Republican legislators and the state GOP.
Democrats say raising taxes is preferable to a proposal by GOP Gov. Linda Lingle that assumes she can wrangle $278 million in concessions from state worker unions during contract negotiations this year.
