Hawaii weather: Heavy rains possible again today

A weakening cold front near Maui County will transition to a shear line today, as northeast winds spread to all islands, the National Weather Service said.

The shear line will move slowly south today and tonight, bringing it' s low clouds and showers to the northern half of the Big Island, forecasters said.

The shear line will gradually dissipate near the Big Island on Wednesday. A low pressure area will develop over the islands from late Thursday, and linger into the weekend, bringing the possibility of more heavy rain.

Today' s northeast winds will weaken and become light to moderate easterly trade winds by Wednesday, and these winds will prevail into the weekend.

Here's how the middle of the work week is shaping up:

Today: Scattered showers. The rain could be heavy at times. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 79. Northeast wind between 15 and 17 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Tonight: Isolated showers. Partly cloudy, with a low around 67. East wind between 9 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Wednesday: Isolated showers. Partly cloudy, with a high near 79. East wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Wednesday Night: Scattered showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 67. East wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Thursday: Isolated showers. Partly cloudy, with a high near 79. East wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
