Kamakani Enos looked on at last year’s festival as Butch Detroye made pa‘i‘ai, or hard, pounded but undiluted taro. Bishop Museum hosts the event again today.

The celebration is continuing today at the Grow Hawaiian Festival at Bishop Museum.

The family-oriented eco-fest uses hands-on activities such as beating kapa, weaving lauhala, pounding poi and creating Hawaiian implements to teach attendees about conservation, sustainability, Hawai'i's cultural heritage and the state's endemic and Polynesian-introduced plants.

Hawaiian art by leading practitioners will be on display, and farmers and gardeners will talk about growing taro, medicinal plants and even how to build a pili grass hale. Plants will also be on sale, along with clothing embellished with Hawaiian designs and lomilomi massage sessions.

Hawaiian Electric Co. is sponsoring the event, which offers free admission to kama'aina and military from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
