HILO — Hawaii County fire rescue personnel came to the aid of six paddlers caught in the open ocean yesterday when their outrigger canoe swamped off Honolii Point.
The paddlers were members of the Keaukaha Canoe Club. They were about 200 yards offshore when surging ocean conditions flipped their canoe.
The paddlers stayed together near the overturned canoe until a rescue boat arrived.
The canoe was towed to shore near Hilo Bay Front and the paddlers were brought in by boat.
There were no injuries.
