A man accused of the shooting death of another man outside a Ke'eaumoku-area karaoke club early Friday morning made his initial appearance in District Court yesterday and was ordered to appear at a preliminary hearing at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow.

District Judge Edwin Nacino confirmed bail of $2 million for Phillip Dejesus Deleon, 33, who was charged with second-degree murder in the slaying of Shawn Powell, 35, in a parking lot in front of a row of business along Rycroft Street.

Deleon also was charged with one count each of attempted first-degree murder, keeping a firearm in an improper place and first-degree reckless endangering, and two counts of failure to store a firearm in a proper place.

Deleon appeared at the hearing in bare feet, wearing a white jumpsuit, with his legs shackled at the ankles and his arms handcuffed behind his back.

Six deputy sheriffs escorted Deleon into and out of the courtroom. He was represented at the hearing by Deputy Public Defender Melissa Lam and said nothing during his 90-second appearance.

Deleon was arrested about 9:40 p.m. Friday at Honolulu International Airport, where he was preparing to leave on a 9:50 p.m. Delta Air Lines flight to Salt Lake City.
