VIDEO: UH football team dons shoulder pads for the first time in fall camp
University of Hawai'i wideout Malcolm Lane will redshirt this season to focus on academics.
"This way I can work on graduating while I'm here," said Lane, who has not redshirted during his first three UH seasons.
Lane is in good academic standing with the school and NCAA.
The move allows him to accumulate enough credits to graduate after the 2010 season.
"We have mutually agreed Malcolm will redshirt during the 2009 season," UH head coach Greg McMackin said. "This will help him work toward a degree."
Lane reported to training camp Wednesday, but did not participate in the first three practices.
Lane, who was the Warriors' starting right wideout last season, said he will not participate in fall camp.
"I want to take some time off to work on school," Lane said. "This doesn't have anything to do with the team. I love my coaches. I love my teammates. I'll be supporting my team this year. I'll be cheering them on."
Jovonte Taylor, who redshirted last season after suffering from a stomach virus, has worked as the No. 1 right wideout in training camp. Taylor is regarded as the Warriors' fastest player.
