Those who fish in harbor now must check in and out
People fishing in Kahului Harbor now must make stops at a check station as well as report their catch to the state, the Maui News reported.
The state on Aug. 4 began implementing administrative rules that went into effect at the end of April for the Kahului Harbor Fisheries Management Area. Although the rules were enacted several months ago, the Department of Land and Natural Resources last week was able to finish posting signs and erecting check-in stations around the harbor.
In addition to checking in and out and reporting catches, the new rules limit catches to 50 marine prey per day.
Snagging is prohibited, as is using more than two poles with one line each. Rules are in the most recent Hawaii Fishing Regulations book and online at http://hawaii.gov/dlnr/dar/regulated_areas_maui.html.
"The need for the check-in and check-out stations is to document the effects of these regulations," said Russell Sparks, education specialist with the DLNR's Division of Aquatic Resources.
