Oceanographer, big-wave surfer Ricky Grigg at Chinatown Boardroom tonight

Advertiser staff

Chinatown Boardroom hosts Ricky Grigg as the speaker for this month’s Surf Discussion Series, which coincides with the Chinatown Arts District Third Thursday events.
The free event takes place from 6:30 to 7:30 today at the Chinatown Boardroom, an art gallery and board shop, 1160 Nuuanu Ave., Honolulu.
Grigg’s life has been one of adventure, from big-wave surfing to deep-sea diving and oceanography, a marriage of sports and science.
In the 1960s Grigg was known as one of the best big-wave surfers of the era, and in 1967 Surfer Magazine rated him No.1 in the world. He won the Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Championship in 1966 and 1968.
Grigg earned a Ph.D. from Scripps Institute of Oceanography and became a professor at the University of Hawaii-Manoa. He has authored a number of books about surfing, science and the ocean.
At the Surf Discussion event, Grigg will discuss “Environmental Fallacies” — misconceptions about the state of the ocean environment, in particular, and he will be available for a book signing.
