WAI'ANAE — Two people were injured, one critically, when a motorcycle collided with a car making a left turn yesterday afternoon on Farrington Highway.
The motorcyclist, a man who appeared to be in his 20s, was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition, police Sgt. Alan Vegas said.
A female passenger in the car was injured and taken to Queen's in stable condition. The other three occupants of the car were not hurt, Vegas said.
The crash and subsequent police investigation prompted the closure of three of four lanes of Farrington Highway from 3 to 6 p.m.
The crash happened near 85-761 Farrington Highway, between the McDonald's and Taco Bell restaurants. Vegas said a Nissan Versa was traveling toward Honolulu when it turned left on to Old Government Road.
The Makaha-bound motorcycle hit the passenger side of the car. The impact threw the motorcyclist into the Honolulu-bound lanes and crushed the passenger side of the car.
Wai'anae resident Donald Donato was walking along the sidewalk near McDonald's when the crash occurred.
"l saw the motorcycle fly going pretty fast heading toward Makaha," Donato said. "And you can see the skid mark there — about 20 yards, or more — before he broadsided the white car that was turning left on to Old Government Road.
"It was terrible. He went down really hard and didn't move."
Police closed both Makaha-bound lanes of Farrington Highway and one Honolulu-bound lane, and redirected traffic onto Old Government Road while they investigated the crash.
