DETROIT Lions coach Jim Schwartz said he is no closer to naming a starting quarterback after Saturday nights 27-10 exhibition loss at Cleveland.
Rookie Matthew Stafford struggled. Veteran Daunte Culpepper was solid, though he didnt lead the Lions to a score, either.
The two continued to split reps in practice Monday.
We still have a long way to go, Schwartz said. Ive never put a timetable on it. . . . Were just going to keep on evaluating.
Schwartz said he could decide on a starter as soon as this week or as late as after the fourth exhibition, Sept. 3 at Buffalo. Whenever he decides, he might keep it quiet.
It probably wont be this week, but well see, Schwartz said. And the other thing is, from our standpoint, it may be even a point where we make a decision on a quarterback and we may not even announce it.
The Lions open the season Sept. 13 at New Orleans.
Theres a team down in New Orleans thats getting ready to play us, Schwartz said. If they can zero in on one quarterback, it makes it a little easier for them to play. ...
Mostly likely well try to just keep that a little bit close to the vest.
