The 39th Annual Maui Marathon is adding a twist to the festivities.
The Sept. 20 race won't be just a race. It will be the culmination of a three-day event that features local and Native Hawaiian culture, according to event founder Rudy Huber.
For both the full and the half marathon races, a live warm-up with local aerobics instructors will help get runners' blood pumping. This will be followed by hula and knife-dance performances by some of the Islands' top athletes until the blowing of a conch signals the start of the race. At select aid stations, close to 20 local bands are anticipated to play Island hits to keep the runners moving to the finish.
