The ninth annual Times Supermarkets/Kraft Foods "Shop and Score" program kicked off yesterday, offering consumers a chance to contribute to their favorite high school's athletic program.
Since its inception in 2002, the Shop and Score program has donated more than $600,000 worth of sports equipment and uniforms to O'ahu schools.
This year, $100,000 worth of adidas equipment and uniforms will be distributed, based on the percentage of total points earned by each school.
The schools earn points when consumers buy selected Kraft products at any Times location and designate the school they want their points to go to. The program runs until Oct. 6.
Last year, nearly 50 O'ahu schools participated and Mililani earned more than $14,000 worth of athletic equipment and uniforms.
Due to Department of Education budget cuts, public high school athletic programs were allocated less than 64 percent of their 2009-2010 amounts, including only 50 percent for equipment and supplies.
