Leslie Tanaka was sworn in as the city auditor in July 2003. He plans to retire at the end of the year.

Honolulu’s city auditor, Leslie Tanaka, will be retiring at the end of the year, the Office of the City Auditor announced yesterday.

Tanaka was Honolulu’s first independent city auditor for the City and County of Honolulu and was appointed to the position in July 2003. He recently informed the City Council that he will not seek appointment to a second six-year term. He said is looking forward to traveling more with his wife and helping care for his 91-year-old father.
Tanaka cited accomplishments of his office over the past six years to include:

Completing 24 performance audits and overseeing the city’s annual financial audit for the past six years,

Completeing more than 77 percent of council-requested audits,

Passing the required independent peer reviews of his office’s operations in 2008 and 2009 with no deficiencies,

Winning a national award for his road maintenance audit in 2006 and

Maintaining a stable office work force with zero turnover since the creation of the office in 2003.
Tanaka, who is a CPA, has worked in government for almost 39 years, including at the State Auditor’s Office and Kapiolani Community College.
