Maui County officials today relocated the lifeguard tower at Baldwin Beach in Paia further inland to prevent it from damage and made other preparations for “exceptionally high surf” expected to arrive tomorrow.

Maui police, ocean safety officers and fire department rescue made staffing adjustments for the possibility that high surf could inundate roads on Maui, Molokai and Lanai.
It’s possible that some Maui County beaches also could be closed tomorrow, county officials said.
On Saturday, volunteers from the county's Community Emergency Response Team program delivered fliers to more than 500 homes and businesses in Keanae, Kahakuloa and Paukukalo.
County officials also warned people to avoid ocean activities that could put them at risk in the high surf.
Drivers are cautioned that roads could become swamped with surf and should plan for extra drive times through high surf areas.
Everyone was encouraged to avoid going into the ocean and turning their backs on waves — even when on shore or along rocky coastlines.
Residents were warned to be prepared to evacuate if asked by police and not to leave pets alone. People with special needs are encouraged to take any necessary steps to ensure their safety.
