Police are cracking down on people who are parked illegally on the North Shore for the big waves.

Dozens of people are illegally parked along Kamehameha Highway in front of Waimea Bay, where the Eddie Aikau surf meet kicked off this morning.

People are also parked in front of fire hydrants, and are blocking roads, sidewalks and driveways, said police.

There was no tally yet on how many citations have been issued.

Conservative estimates put those who came out for the event at 10,000.

The crowd is packed on the beach and also along the highway, where they are four- to six-people deep. Some attendees brought tents and spent the night in the area or slept in truckbeds.

Meanwhile, some North Shore residents are taking advantage of the crowds, offering up their driveways for $10 a car and up.

North Shore residents say the crowds can be a major headache.

“Traffic is slow. It’s bumper to bumper,” said Michael Lyons, chairman of the North Shore Neighborhood Board. He added, “People just have to expect that in this situation.”

Lyons said his biggest concern is for pedestrians, many of whom are walking in the roadway or darting across streets, sometimes because sidewalks and walkways have been blocked by cars.
