Official says his office lacks the $2 million needed for special election

The state's chief elections officer said this afternoon that a special election to fill the remainder of U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie's term could cost $2 million, money that his office does not have.
Kevin Cronin, the state's chief elections officer, also said a special election would not be held any sooner than 60 days following a vacancy.
Abercrombie has not yet announced the date when he plans to resign.
Legal challenges have left the state with no voting machines until new administrative rules are adopted and bids are received, a process that could take several months.
Cronin is resigning at the end of year, so an interim chief elections officer will likely make the critical decisions about a special election.
