The conversation was hushed and confidential. Subjects were vastly varied: children, surfing, Waikíkí beach boys, the importance of quitting smoking. They sounded like old friends chatting over coffee. Although Arleen Machado and Julie Santos had just met a half hour ago, they bonded in the way that a manicurist often bonds with her clients, creating a therapeutic relationship.

The scene, however, was not a nail or beauty salon. It was the courtyard at Aloha Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre in Käne'ohe. Santos is not a manicurist (yet); she is a cosmetology student at Honolulu Community College.

HCC's cosmetology and esthetician students were at Aloha Nursing to serve residents as a holiday gift to the community. They first came to Aloha Nursing on Oct. 18 for Make a Difference Day, sponsored by USA Weekend magazine, and enjoyed it so much they wanted to return. Shahaney Bailey, president of the HCC Cosmetology Club, summed it up: "We do it 'cause it's fun."

In the courtyards, they did haircuts and styling, manicures and hand massage — all services that students also provide to the public.

The residents' appreciation was evident on their beaming faces.

Student Stephanie Kurosawa said volunteering during the holidays provides "an internal reward."
