Big Island police fatally shoot Puna man in standoff

Advertiser Staff

A 60-year-old man was shot and killed by Hawaiçi County police early Wednesday morning after he allegedly threatened officers with a gun following a nearly 10-hour standoff at his Puna home.

The man’s name has not been released by police pending notification of his family.
The incident began about 2:50 a.m. when officers responded to a report of shots being fired inside a home in the Kehena Beach Estates in lower Puna. As officers approached the home, they reported hearing additional shots, police said.
Police closed Highway 37 between the 19- and 20-mile markers and residents in the vicinity of the home were evacuated. The police crisis negotiation team began talking with the man, who was barricaded in the home, police said.
Shortly after 1 p.m., the man left the house and got into a struggle with police. At that point, the man was shot, police said.
Police did not say how many times the man was shot.
