A 1-year-old boy who was struck by a sport utility vehicle and killed in the driveway of a Kahaluu home Wednesday has been identified as Ezekiel Estocado of Kaneohe, the city medical examiner said.
The toddler died as a result of brain injuries received in the incident, the medical examiner said. The manner of death was determined to be an accident.
Police said a 2003 Chevy Tahoe driven by a 31-year-old woman was reversing out of a carport on Ahaolelo Road when the vehicle struck the boy. Police said the boy had apparently run from an adjacent yard into the path of the SUV at about 5:20 p.m.
The boy was taken to the Kahaluu fire station where he was treated by firefighters until paramedics arrived. The boy was transported to Castle Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 6:07 p.m., police said.
Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in this incident, police said. Because it occurred in a private driveway, the death was not classified as a traffic fatality.
