A 60-year-old man was shot and killed by Hawai'i County police early yesterday morning after he allegedly threatened officers with a gun following a nearly 10-hour standoff at his Puna home.
The man's name has not been released by police pending notification of his family.
The incident began about 2:50 a.m. when officers responded to a report of shots being fired inside a house in the Kehena Beach Estates in lower Puna.
As officers approached the home, they reported hearing additional shots, police said.
Police closed Highway 37 between the 19- and 20-mile markers and residents in the vicinity of the home were evacuated. A police crisis negotiation team began talking with the man, who was barricaded in the home, police said.
Shortly after 1 p.m., the man left the house and got into a struggle with police. At that point, the man was shot, police said.
Police did not say how many times the man was shot.
