Toddler killed after being struck by SUV identified
A 1-year-old boy who died after he was struck by a sport utility vehicle in the driveway of a Kahalu'u home Wednesday has been identified as Ezekiel Estocado of Käne'ohe, the city medical examiner said.
The toddler died as a result of brain injuries received in the incident, the medical examiner said. The death was classified as an accident.
Police said a 2003 Chevy Tahoe driven by a 31-year-old woman was reversing out of a carport on 'Aha'olelo Road when the vehicle struck the boy. Police said the boy had apparently run from an adjacent yard into the path of the SUV at about 5:20 p.m. Wednesday.
The boy was taken to the Kahalu'u fire station, and firefighters treated him until paramedics arrived. The boy was transported to Castle Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 6:07 p.m., police said.
Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in this incident, police said. Because it occurred in a private driveway, the death was not classified as a traffic fatality.
