The National Weather Service has extended a flash flood warning for the Big Island until 11:30 tonight.

At about 8:15 p.m., heavy rain was poised to move over saturated ground in the Hilo and Puna areas, potentially leading to flash flooding, the weather service said.

Other areas under the warning include Kapoho, Hawaiian Paradise Park and Hawaiian Beaches.

In the 12-hour period ending at 5 p.m., Pahoa had received nearly 4 inches of rain, Waiakea Uka had gotten nearly 3.5 inches, Honokaa had more than 2 inches and Hilo Airport had nearly 2.75 inches.

Residents are urged to move away from streams and low lying areas to higher ground.

Do not try to cross fast flowing or rising water either in a vehicle or afoot.
