Advertiser Staff

A brushfire that started on Thursday in South Kona is now about 95 percent contained, firefighters said.

The fire was first reported at 1:42 p.m. Thursday is up Hokukano Ranch near Konawaena High School at the 4,000 foot elevation, said Big Island Fire Battalion Chief Marshall Luke.
More than 1,500 acres have burned in a mostly forested area, Luke said.
"We're trying to confine the fire," Luke said. "Today we went up there and the rain tha thit most of the Big island wet down most of the fire area, but there's still some hotspots."
Four firefighters will work through the night on the hotspots and in the morning firefighters will reassess the fire and how many firefighters may be needed, Luke said.
"It's a large forested area," he said. "We began trying to confine the fire on Thursday evening and built up fire breaks around the fire by late Friday."
No homes are threatened by the fire, nor have any injuries been reported.
