HPU women pounce on Pacific

Jazzmin Awa-Williams had 15 points and 12 rebounds, and Genesis Lewis added 14 points and nine rebounds to lead Hawai'i Pacific over Pacific University, 70-59, yesterday in the Malika Sports Hoop 'N Surf Classic at Kilauea gym.

Rochell Reeves-Howe led Pacific (3-4) with 22 points.

HPU (3-3) took control from the opening tip, racing to a 17-1 lead.

The lead swelled to as many as 19 points in the second half, as HPU cruised to the 11-point win.

Mana Hopkins had eight points and 11 rebounds, and Paris Gravely added 11 points for HPU, which outrebounded the Tigers, 47-37.

George Fox 57, Chaminade 39: Elise Kuenzi had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Keisha Gordon added 14 points to lead the Bruins over the Silverswords yesterday in the Malika Sports Hoop 'N Surf Classic at Kilauea gym.

Kayci Will led Chaminade (1-4) with 15 points.

Chaminade led 17-16 at halftime, but was outscored 41-22 in the second half when the Bruins (6-2) shot 57 percent (16 of 28).

TOP-RANKED WOMEN

No. 1 Connecticut 90, Iona 35: Maya Moore tied a season high with 23 points to lead the host Huskies (9-0) over Gaels (3-7). The Huskies have won all of their games by at least 25 points and average a 46.4-point margin of victory going into Wednesday's game against No. 2 Stanford.

No. 4 Notre Dame 90, Charlotte 31: Ashley Barlow scored a season-high 19 points and the host Irish (10-0) forced 43 turnovers in a victory over the 49ers (5-6). The Irish put together runs of 16-0 to start the game and 30-3 in the second half, and five players had at least three steals.

No. 20 Nebraska 77, No. 5 LSU 63: Kelsey Griffin had 30 points and 14 rebounds to lead the host Cornhuskers (11-0) to an upset of the Tigers (9-1). The Cornhuskers jumped to a 21-4 lead before the Tigers pulled to 41-36 early in the second half. But Nebraska went on a 12-2 run and led by double digits the rest of the game.

TOP-RANKED MEN

Florida State 66, No. 22 Georgia Tech 51: Ryan Reid scored a career-high 17 points, and Chris Singleton hit the go-ahead basket with 1:05 left in overtime to help the Seminoles (10-2, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) beat the host Yellow Jackets (8-2, 0-1 ACC).

No. 14 Connecticut 60, Central Florida 51: Stanley Robinson scored 26 points and the host Huskies (7-2) rallied to beat the Knights (7-4).

SMALL COLLEGE MEN

Alaska Anchorage 75, Chaminade 53: Brandon Walker scored 20 points and the Seawolves beat the Silverswords in the AT&T Jamboree at Alaska, Anchorage.

Steven Bennett led Chaminade (3-6) with 20 points.

Alaska Anchorage (7-2) shot 46 percent (13 of 28) to take a commanding 40-19 at intermission.

Chandler Pearson led Chaminade with nine rebounds.

Hawai'i Pacific 86, Grace Bible College (Mich.) 56: Ray Murdock hit five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 22 points to lead four teammates in double figures as the Sea Warriors beat the Tigers at Mid-Pacific Institute.

HPU was 10 of 29 from 3-point range and outrebounded the Tigers 47-37.

Mike Helton added 18 points and 10 rebounds, Norman Wells had 13 points, Jeff Ingram 13 and C.J. Jackson 12 points and 10 rebounds for HPU (6-3).

Allen Durham led Grace Bible (12-7) with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
