Christmas Day wasn't so festive for the University of Hawai‘i men's basketball team.

Saint Mary's defeated the Rainbow Warriors, 84-75, in the third-place game of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Hawai'i went 1-2 in the inaugural tournament to finish in fourth place. The 'Bows dropped to 6-6 overall.

Saint Mary's went 2-1 in the tournament and improved to 11-2 overall. The 'Bows played without leading scorer Roderick Flemings, who was not in uniform because of a knee injury he suffered in Hawai'i's previous game on Wednesday.

Dwain Williams, who started in place of Flemings, scored a career-high 36 points for the the ¹Bows. He made four 3-pointers and also went 16 of 18 on free throws.

It was the third-most points scored by a Hawai'i player in the Sheriff Center. Flemings scored 37 in a game last season, as did Tes Whitlock in 1994.

Petras Balocka added 12 points and nine rebounds for Hawai'i, which shot for a .480 percentage from the field.

Omar Samhan led Saint Mary's with 24 points and seven rebounds, and Mickey McConnell added 17 points and six assists.

Without Flemings, the ¹Bows matched the Gaels shot for shot early in the game. Hawaiçi led for the last time at 18-16 with 9:30 remaining.

Saint Mary's then went on a 12-0 run to take a 28-18 lead. The 6-foot-11 Samhan sparked the surge with a steal and length-of-the-court drive for a dunk.

The Gaels eventually took a 37-33 lead at intermission. The ¹Bows kept it close by shooting for a .583 percentage in the first half.

The Gaels seized control for good with a 12-2 surge that increased their lead to 55-40 with 13:32 remaining.

Hawaiçi made a late charge at the Gaels, getting as close as 79-73 with 24.9 seconds remaining. But Saint Mary's secured the win by going 5 for 6 from the free throw line after that.

Saint Mary's went 29 of 31 from the free throw line during the game, while Hawai'i went 21 of 26.

The 'Bows will play another non-conference game on Monday when they host Northwestern State. Hawai'i will open the Western Athletic Conference season on Jan. 2 when it hosts Idaho.
