HAPPY COUCH POTATO DAY
After the gifts have been opened and the Christmas-morning breakfast dishes are cleared, there's nothing we like more than doing absolutely nothing except being entertained by the good folks in Hollywood. Christmas Day at the movies brings good cheer, and today we're rushing out to see "Sherlock Holmes," which has already been nominated for a couple of Golden Globes. And if home is your first choice for a holiday veg-out session, there's lots to watch on television. Here's a list of the best holiday programming on television today:
• "Kamehameha Schools Christmas Concert," 10 a.m., CBS
• "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation," plays all day, AMC
• "A Christmas Story," plays all day, TBS
• "Bad Santa," plays all day, Spike
• "The Nightmare Before Christmas," 3 p.m., The Disney Channel
• "Miracle on 34th Street," 4 p.m., The Family Channel
• "Home Alone," 5:30 p.m., FX
• "Elf," 8 p.m., USA
KEEP SHOPPING
So the Christmas shopping is pau. All that means is that it's time for after-Christmas mega sales! Starting at 8 a.m. tomorrow, shopping malls all over the island will be open for business, and will be selling off their surplus of holiday wares for super-duper cheap.
AND A 'GLEE'-FUL NEW YEAR
Gleeks can start the new year off right — with cheesy musical numbers and high school baby-mama drama — when "Glee: Season 1, Vol. 1: Road to Sectionals" is released on DVD Tuesday. Let the "Glee" marathon (with sing-alongs, of course) begin.
ALOHA, BRENT'S
Sorry to be a downer on Christmas Day, but the rumors are true: Brent's Restaurant & Delicatessen (262-8588) in Kailua is closing its doors on Thursday. This is your last chance to get the best New York-style deli sandwiches on the island.
HOLIDAY THEATER
The Actors' Group presents W.H. Auden's "For the Time Being," a Christmas oratorio, through Jan. 3 (7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday, $10, 722-6941).
LET THERE BE LIGHTS
What better day than today to venture out for a Christmas-light tour of some of this island's most festive neighborhoods? The best places to see over-the-top Christmas lights: Kapolei, Pauoa, Käne'ohe and Waipahu.
FROM THE SYMPHONY, WITH LOVE
Honolulu Symphony musicians do a free concert of Beethoven's 9th.
Blaisdell Concert Hall / 4 p.m. Sunday / free, donations accepted / reserve tickets at 591-2211
'IOLANI PALACE BY NIGHT
'Iolani Palace will be open tomorrow — and lit with lanterns — for guided night tours of the palace in commemoration of Queen Kapi'olani's birthday, which is Dec. 31 (5-9 p.m., $3-$6, 522-0822).
