A high surf warning remains in effect for north- and west-facing shores, with waves of 30 to 40 feet expected to arrive today.

The National Weather Service said the warning will be in effect for north-facing shores of O'ahu, Moloka'i and Maui, as well north- and west-facing shores of Kaua'i and Ni'ihau. The warning runs through 6 p.m. tomorrow.

The surf was expected to rise rapidly overnight to 22 to 28 feet and then be in the 30- to 40-foot range today with higher sets on outer reefs, the weather service said. On west-facing shores, surf heights of 15 to 20 feet were forecast for last night with waves ranging from 20 to 30 feet today.

Yesterday, city lifeguards made five rescues and took 300 preventative actions, or warnings, on O'ahu's North Shore, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city's Emergency Services Department.

In Kahuku, a surfer died yesterday after he was pulled from waters off the Kahuku Golf Course. The man, who appeared to be in his 50s, was surfing in a spot known as "7th Hole."

When paramedics and firefighters arrived at about 12:15 p.m., bystanders were performing CPR on the man, Cheplic said. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

The surf in the area at the time was in the 4- to 6-foot range, with light wind conditions. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

Beachgoers are being advised to use caution because of the large waves.

The city Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division offers these safety tips:

• Always swim at a beach with a lifeguard.

• Consult a lifeguard on ocean conditions before entering the water.

• Heed all warning signs.

• Never swim alone.

• If you see someone in distress, call a lifeguard or dial 911.

• Know your limits. If in doubt , don't go out.
