The Salvation Army says red kettle donations in Hawaii increased this year despite the economic downturn.
The red kettles grossed more than $882,000, a 12.5 percent increase over last year, the Salvation Army said in a news release.
“We are very pleased and pleasantly surprised that the people of Hawaii have responded so positively to our appeal for support especially during these difficult times,” said Major Edward Hill, divisional commander of The Salvation Army in Hawaii.
“We are heartened by the generous donors who have shown their trust and confidence in believing that The Salvation Army will continue to deliver the necessary services needed to help the increasing number of people most affected by the economic crisis.”
In addition to providing holiday assistance to families, donations received through the annual red kettle campaign will be used year-round to provide services to those needing food, clothing and shelter, the Salvation Army said.
