Mililani girls edge Pearl City

MILILANI — Khyla Alcantra scored on a coast-to-coast layup as time expired to lift Mililani to a thrilling 38-36 victory over Pearl City last night in O'ahu Interscholastic Association girls basketball action.
The Trojans, who had tied the game at 36-36 just 13 seconds earlier on a layup by Kellie Sakai, improved to 5-1 in the OIA's Red Conference Western Division. The Chargers fell to 5-1, now tied with Mililani and Kapolei in first place.
Pearl City had gone up, 36-34, on Keshia Manning's free throw with 45 seconds remaining. After Sakai tied it, the Chargers advanced the ball to halfcourt and called timeout with 7.1 seconds left. They tried to throw a long backdoor pass, but the ball was tipped and went out of bounds off a Pearl City player, giving Mililani possession with 5.4 ticks on the clock.
"That was our first option, but it wasn't open," Chargers coach Mike Morton said of the play. "We shouldn't have thrown it."
Sakai then inbounded the ball to Alcantra, who sped down the left side and toward the basket. She stopped about five feet away from the rim and put up a soft banker that fell through the net as the horn went off, setting off a loud Trojans celebration.
"When I was dribbling, I thought I might run out of time," said Alcantra, a post player whose layup had closed Mililani to 35-34 with two minutes remaining. "When I got close to the basket, I decided to take the shot."
Trojans coach Pat Basilio said he elected not to call a timeout after seeing Alcantra dribble up the court unobstructed.
"I told the girls, 'If we get a turnover or rebound, push it up,' " Basilio said. "I saw that we had a good transition break going, so I let it go."
The victory was tempered by an ankle injury to Mililani post player Darcey Goulsby, who fell to the ground and exited the floor with 3:41 left in the third period after scoring a team-high 11 points.
Basilio said Goulsby's status is questionable for Saturday's game at Radford.
Goulsby had been effective until her injury, even scoring on an improbable running 3-point bank shot as time expired in the first period after weaving up the court with behind-the-back dribbles using each hand.
That gave the Trojans an 8-7 lead, and they opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run to make it 15-7 after Sakai's layup with 3:40 remaining. But Sabrina Angle broke the run with a 3-pointer and Pearl City closed to 16-14 by halftime after Leina Barques' layup with 13 seconds left.
Mililani led 23-21 when Goulsby was injured in the lane, but the Chargers took a 27-25 lead on two free throws by Barques eight seconds before the third period ended.
Pearl City went up, 35-32, on Alana Kaili's two free throws with 2:17 remaining in the game.
Manning and Jordan Ahakuelo each finished with 11 points to lead the Chargers.
