WAILUKU — After arresting a sixth suspect, police are wrapping up an investigation into a robbery and assaults at Paia Bay in December, The Maui News reported today.
The crimes were reported the afternoon of Dec. 22 when a 16-year-old Haiku boy was robbed of his bodyboard, wallet, shoes and fins. The boy reported being "mobbed" by a group of males.
When his parents showed up at the beach and tried to get back the youth's property, the 54-year-old father said he was hit in the face by one man and in the back of the head with a skateboard by another man. The father fell to the ground and was kicked, and his wife was punched when she tried to pull him away.
The father was hospitalized after his jaw was broken in two places.
The suspects, who ran in different directions, weren't at the scene when police arrived three minutes after a 911 call. But through investigation, including review of footage from a nearby video surveillance camera, police identified suspects in the case.
Three men, ages 18, 19 and 20, and two boys, ages 14 and 15, were previously arrested.
On Jan. 29, the sixth suspect, a 20-year-old Wailuku man, was arrested. All of the suspects were released pending further investigation.
Police are completing reports in the case that will be forwarded to the prosecutor's office for review.
The police Juvenile Section is handling the investigation.
