Kalaheo boys rally past Moanalua, 57-54

KAILUA — Aaron Fernandez drained a 3-pointer with 15 seconds remaining to give Kalaheo a one-point lead and Matt Gasparine blocked a Moanalua layup attempt 10 seconds later to preserve a thrilling 57-54 victory last night in O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys basketball action.
The home victory before a Senior Night crowd of about 500 ended the Mustangs' regular season at 8-4 in the OIA Red Conference Eastern Division. They will receive at least the East's third seed in the upcoming league playoffs and most likely home-court advantage in the first round.
Moanalua fell to 5-6 with one game remaining — at Kahuku (11-0) tomorrow.
"I wanted us to win it for the (six) seniors," said Fernandez, a junior wing. "They've worked hard for us all season."
Na Menehune led 13-6 after one period, 31-20 at halftime and 52-41 with 5:34 left in the game after two free throws by Marcus Monroe. But Moanalua, already with four players out on academic probation, ran into deep foul trouble late and Kalaheo capitalized with an 11-2 run that closed it to 54-52 with 59 seconds remaining.
The Mustangs then gained possession on a turnover and called timeout with 30 seconds left, setting up Fernandez as an option. He swished the 3-pointer — his only one of the game — from about 21 feet out on the right wing.
"(Christian) Kepa had the ball up top (on the high post), and Matt was covered by two guys down low," Fernandez said. "So Kepa kicked the ball out to me, I took a step back and I made it."
Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado said he tried to emphasize to his team that it was still very much within reach even down nine (52-43) with 3:19 left.
"I told them, 'We still get plenty time,' " Furtado said. "We just gotta make some stops on defense and make the plays on offense."
Na Menehune raced downcourt and had a driving layup attempt down the middle swatted away by Gasparine, and Richard Preza-Haynes grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 2.1 ticks showing on the clock.
Preza-Haynes sank both free throws, and Moanalua's ensuing long inbounds pass hit the rafters and the Mustangs were able to inbound and run out the clock.
It was just the latest in several disappointing losses for Na Menehune, who had only one starter left on the court in the game's closing moments. They played the final 2:32 without top scorer Monroe, who had fouled out, and veteran guard Josiah Kauhola, who fouled out about a minute earlier.
"It's nobody's fault but ours and our kids'," Moanalua coach Greg Tacon said. "We just gotta learn how to make plays at the end of the game. The other team has to make plays, too, but we haven't learned how to do that yet."
Gasparine led Kalaheo with 21 points, and Kepa added 10 points.
Monroe scored a game-high 22 points to lead Na Menehune, and Kauhola added 10 points.
